To get the public on his side, Councilman Jam uses scare tactics in his marketing strategy and tries to convince his community that Leslie Knope is trying to put dangerous chemicals in their water. Unfortunately, another Pawnee council member owns a dental practice, and tries to convince the town to vote against merging reservoirs to maintain his large list of citizens with cavities who give him business. Eagleton’s water has fluoride in it, while Pawnees does not. Leslie Knope tries to make a positive impact in her community when their town is presented with the opportunity to join water reservoirs with their sister town, Eagleton. The moral to this story is, you really have to understand your audience, because what offends you, might not offend them. Surprisingly, many people of Pawnee enjoy this restaurant and take no offense to the fact that this establishment thrives off of their unhealthy habits. Their local fast food joint, Paunch Burger, specializes in a few out-of-pocket menu items like ‘The Greasy Lard Bomb,” and a slogan that reads ‘Put it in your mouth or you’re a nerd.’ Pawnee, Indiana, (where the show takes place) is home to some of the heaviest people in America (they had the first case ever of super diabetes), and boy do they have no shame. Throughout the show there are numerous examples of good, and surprisingly bad, branding. Because some members of the team are more dedicated than others, Leslie is always thinking of new ways to get her team motivated and as enthusiastic about their work as she is.ĭuring the numerous times I’ve cycled through the show’s seven seasons, I’ve discovered a number of lessons from the show that also apply to marketing. Although it’s surprising, the dynamic of this group makes their work efficient and entertaining at the same time.įrom capitalism to consumer choice, Leslie Knope and her team are ready to serve the members of their community. Some are enthusiastic and passionate, while others secretly try to dismantle the parks department from within. We will protest! We will handcuff ourselves to all of the radiators! Or at the very least, we will cry very, very hard.If you’ve ever watched “Parks and Recreation,” you know how diverse the characters are. Nothing has ever made us happier, to be totally honest with you. Gary/Jerry/Larry was sworn in after being carried on a throne over a red carpet to the sounds of a choir and escorted into a hot air balloon, surrounded by fireworks. No, there was only one man for the job of Pawnee's interim mayor, and his name is currently Gary Gergich. He first hosted some auditions – Bobby Newport ( Paul Rudd) showed up, along with Joan Callamezzo and all of the Sapersteins – but it soon became clear that Ben himself was the only choice, until Ben decided he didn't want anything to tarnish the glory of his Icetown failure. Unfortunately, we only met the mayor because he had just died, so Bill Murray played a dead guy in a casket and provided a video message about how Mayor Gunderson hadn't actually done much or paid very close attention to anything happening in Pawnee, but it was Bill Murray all the same, and it was perfect.Įlsewhere in the episode, Ron's barber died, Leslie worked to help Tom propose to Lucy (she said yes!!!) and Ben had the task of finding the new interim mayor until the next election could be held. Parks and Rec finally, finally reached its crowning achievement: Bill Murray played the mayor. It was weird, brilliant, and amazing as anything we've ever seen, but it barely prepared us for what was about to happen on the next episode. We started with the final episode of The Johnny Karate Super Awesome Musical Explosion Show, featuring the case of Johnny Karate's missing guitar, plus a missing tarantula, and also a recap of Andy Dwyer's life ever since he fell in that pit and broke both of his legs, hosted by Leslie Knope and April Ludgate-Karate-Dwyer, complete with commercials for things like Paunch Burger and Verizon Chipotle Exxon. So who wants The Johnny Karate Super Awesome Musical Explosion Show to be greenlit on Comedy Central and/or Adult Swim immediately?Īs if we weren't already crazy upset that Parks and Rec is ending in a week (!!!!!), tonight's episodes absolutely sealed our devastation, because they were positively perfect.
